Nice, I thought about doing that with my great grandfather's military buttons. He served in WWI. I just thought it was a little whimsical but, yours are definately nice. I just might do that as well.
Although, perhaps a simple method would to get 4 buttons if they are available (two per cufflink) and, using the eyes on the back, attach them with a small chain to create a link with two sides.

It shouldn't be too difficult to do.
Just add a little metal post with a circular stop to the back of the buttons and you'll be good to go.

Yep, that's what I was thinkg too. Actually, double sided cufflinks would probably look better anyway....
