Last week I attended Royal Ascot every day, and the tailoring on show would have made your heart sing. Regrettably, a lot of it was green with age, but nonetheless this was occasion dressing with none of the silly self-consciousness or play-acting that we usually see even on these shores.

This week at Wimbledon will be more prosaic, not to mention more proletarian, but Henley next month will again bring attire, correctly worn and with the stamp of authenticity about it. Cordially as ever, etcMrs Pouncerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06750280825519545045noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5675466308790882678.post-52400766704000317942008-06-24T22:06:00.000-07:002008-06-24T22:06:00.000-07:00Will, I agree. I also take part in the thrift store exchange. It helps this young student keep his finances in check.

Hopefully with the current economic environment & professionals becoming more conservative dress will improve. CNN recently released some statistics that point to that. They went something like dry cleaning, haircuts, and men's wearhouse sales increase during depressions/recessions because people are trying to gain employment. Hopefully it sticks afterward. The Eccentric Orange Gentlemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361573928022080177noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5675466308790882678.post-8490478599290867532008-06-24T20:38:00.000-07:002008-06-24T20:38:00.000-07:00Stephen, what you describe is the never ending pro...Stephen, what you describe is the never ending problem of well-dressed men and women today.
"What's the occasion?"

A lot of times there is no occasion. One does not and should not need an occasion to dress up, though most folks believe the opposite.
You are exactly right. Heck,I've even been called a pimp or been asked if I'm in a play. It's sad when a well dressed man is seen as a pimp, gangsta or rap artist by people because of the mainstream. What happened to tradition and historical insight?
Thanks for the link. I visit Ask Andy once in a while but not regularly.

Emily, good to see you here! And learning something along the way as well.

CheersWillhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17992481826260998376noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5675466308790882678.post-5105087171568380042008-06-24T11:27:00.000-07:002008-06-24T11:27:00.000-07:00Looks like another case of low armholes too! Are you going to an interview, court... all sorts of polite examples of blatant racism. Those that aren't bigots ask if I'm mimicking some rapper, nothing against them, but the mainstream examples are not with honorable character. If I wore a hat I know the responses would be overall worse(pimp, nutter, eccentric).

Sadly Hollywood, musicians, and the entertainment business as a whole has warped the very image and connotation of suit and hat wearers. On the Ask Andy forums there was a similar discussion. The conclusion was that most elegant garments have been rendered ridiculous and have ceased to be associated with civility. The few that haven't been vilified are parodied until made costume i.e. spats, bowlers, opera pumps, etc. If you want to see the post copy and paste the following: http://askandyaboutclothes.com/
forum/showthread.php?t=81708&page=4 .

Hopefully with blogs like yours and the forums we can return the rightful associations to said garments. The Eccentric Orange Gentlemanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17361573928022080177noreply@blogger.com
